The Bloodlines of Link

Epilogue

Link and saria sat leaning against the ancient form of the Great Deku Tree. Near them, the Deku Sprout was following their gaze heavenward.
"I'm glad you figured youself out, Link." the sage said, her eyes frozen on the stars. "And I'm glad you chose us as your family and your home."
"Mmmm." Link didn't move either. "I only wish I could meet my mother. But she's gone. It's too late."
"It's never too late. We both know that. We've proven 'too late' wrong infinite times."
"Don't tell me you can summon her ghost or something like that!" Lin turned to look at his best friend. She looked back at him.
"Not as such, no. I'm merely pointing out." she shrugged, "Stranger things have happened. In your life alone." she added as an afterthought.
"And in yours, Saria." now the sprout was speaking, "Neither of you can even try to begin to guess what will happen next in your lives."
"Can you?" the Kokiri asked in unison. Saria added, "Can you tell us what's next?"
"I don't try to guess. Or look. The future is something we see in due course. As is the past, in its own way. Let's leave well enough alone."
They grudgingly accepted his answer and returned to stargazing, and designing constellations.
"Someday," marvelled Link, "we'll be constellations. You, me, Zelda, Ganon and all the other sages. Where would we be? I think that's Ruto, over there."
Saria laughed at the thought of being immortalized in the stars. "Yes, I see her! There's Nabooru, see?"
Link smiled faintly as Saira picked out the rest of them. "See, Link? You're there. Hey, look! You're right of Zelda and below Ganon! Odd." she turned to him. "You're not having fun, are you? Why not?"
"There's one more thing I'd like to know. How did I grow up in the forest? I couldn't have raised myself. Maybe the Deku Tree took care of me.." he looked thoughtful. Saria laughed.
"What? What are you laughing at? It'a good question! If you know the answer, I'd like to hear it!" he sounded offended by her laughter.
"I'm sorry!" she said, gaining her composure. "It's just that I thought you knew! I raised you from the time you first came here til you were 8 years old. Then I was your friend. I even taught you how to use weapons, and an ocarina. I can't beleive you didn't know!"
"But you're my age! How could you raise me if you're just as old as me?"
"I'm not your age!" she was laughing again. "I just look it, remember? I'm actually 30. I'll be 31 next month, you know."
"I think I know when my best friend's birthday is...especially if she's also my mother." With a small laugh, he said, "I guess I did find my mom after all. Thanks for taking care of me all those years."
"Hey, you owe me! You were a little brat!"
"Was not!"
"I think I would know. And did you know you have a middle name? It's Aunder, and your mom came up with it. Link Aunder Dassin was your born name. But now your Link Hero, I guess. I'll tell you all about what you were like as a kid..."
Saria and Link, best friends, sage and hero, mother and son, talked until sunrise, and well through the day.
